The #1 Pick Had No Agent

AJ Dybantsa was drafted first overall by the Washington Wizards in the 2026 NBA Draft. Four years. $69 million. He had no conventional agent representing him through the process.

His father, Ace Dybantsa, handled it. When asked why, he said: "I have nothing against agents. AJ is No. 1. You know how much he's going to make. It's there. Google it. Why do I have to hire an agent to tell me what I already know is fair?"

He understood the infrastructure.

What the CBA Actually Says

The rookie wage scale has been fixed since 1995. It is the rule. It determines outcomes.

When a GM talks to a first-round pick about a contract, the conversation is not about negotiation. The structure has already decided the range. The infrastructure is already in place. Everything that happens after is either clarity or confusion, but the outcome was set the moment the draft happened.

An athlete who understands this operates from a different position than an athlete who doesn't.

The Endorsement Side Is Where It Gets Real

This is what matters: a Western Conference GM told the source that for the first contract, "it's not even negotiating."

But then he said this: "Where it gets complicated is how much will it affect his endorsements, how much will he get if they don't get maximum dollars. If his career ends up being a not-max guy, that'll be the question."

The wage scale answers one question. It does not answer all questions.

The infrastructure for the first contract is transparent. The infrastructure for a career is distributed across multiple structures: endorsements, global market position, financial planning, contract literacy across different jurisdictions. That is where the complexity lives.

That is where athletes need to know the rules before they operate inside them.

Understanding the Structure Changes Everything

Dybantsa's team assembled the people they needed: a lawyer, a financial advisor, a manager, a social media coordinator. They did not hire someone to translate a predetermined wage scale.

They understood what the infrastructure actually does and does not control.

An athlete who understands the CBA before signing anything operates differently. An athlete who understands which parts of their career are predetermined and which parts require strategy operates differently. An athlete who knows the rules operates from leverage, not faith.

The infrastructure is there. It is knowable. It is public.

The only variable is whether an athlete accesses it.

The infrastructure exists. The question is whether every athlete can access it the way the Dybantsa family did. WEVOLV builds the systems that make this the baseline, not the exception.
