Somebody Signed It. Did You Understand It?

Being represented isn't the same as being informed

Here's something that doesn't get said enough. Having someone negotiate for you isn't the same as knowing what you agreed to. You can have an agent. You can have a union. You can have people you trust in the room. And you can still get blindsided by your own contract.

If you think that only happens to athletes who are careless or on their own, look at what happened to one of the most famous teams in cricket.

In 2014, the West Indies board and the players' association signed a new deal that set out how the players would get paid. The players had representation, through a Player Union. The paperwork was done properly. On paper, everyone was covered.

Then the team landed in India for a big tour, and the players realized the new deal had quietly changed how their money worked. Senior players were suddenly looking at serious pay cuts they never saw coming. Their own captain said out loud that they'd signed something they never really understood.

So they walked. They left after the fourth match and went home. The Indian board suspended all cricket between the two countries and came after the West Indies board for around 42 million dollars. It took about a year and a half to clean up, and it only ended when the West Indies agreed to come back and finish the tour they'd abandoned.

All of it started with a contract the players hadn't read or understood before it got signed for them.

What this means for you

You don't have to be alone to get hurt by a deal. You just have to be in the dark. That's the part nobody warns you about.

It doesn't matter if it's an NIL deal, an agency agreement, a revenue share, or a team contract. If you can't read your own agreement and say out loud what you're getting and what you're giving up, you're trusting the paperwork instead of understanding it. Paperwork alone doesn't protect you.

Before you sign anything

Ask to see the real contract, not a summary of it. If someone's negotiating for you, that's a good thing. But you still get to read what they put in front of you.

Give yourself time. Don't sign on the way to a game or the night before a flight. Good deals survive a few days of reading. Bad ones are counting on you being in a hurry.

Know your money. How much, how often, and what's different from last time. If the answer is "don't worry about it," worry about it.

Get your own second opinion. Your rep works on the deal. You want someone whose only job is making sure you understand it. Those are two different things.

You need to know exactly what you're signing. And that's the whole reason WEVOLV exists.
