Since NIL opened the gates, unregistered, uncertified middlemen have flooded high school recruiting. Not agents in any real sense. People who found a gap and stepped into it, before the athlete knew a gap existed.
Coaches are watching it happen in real time. A survey ESPN conducted found that 70% of coaches whose athletes had been approached by these individuals did not believe those people were acting in the athlete's best interest.
The numbers are specific. The pattern isn't subtle.
Some of these arrangements start in middle school. By the time there's a scholarship offer or an NIL deal on the table, there's already a hand in the pocket, asking for 20% to 25% of money the athlete hasn't even touched yet.
High school athletes are more exposed than college athletes. No compliance office. No teammates who've been through it. Sometimes the only kid in their school fielding this kind of offer, with nothing to compare it to and no one inside the system to translate it.
An all-state running back. A committed player. A deal in place.
Then an agent who did nothing of substance demanded a quarter of it, and when the athlete said no, threatened to take back what was never his to give. The deal almost fell through. The school almost walked.
That's not representation. That's leverage built on a young person's confusion.
This is documented. Coaches know it. The FTC is investigating. Senators have introduced legislation. The AFCA took it to Congress. The system is moving slowly, and without uniformity.
Are you, as an athlete, educating yourself before someone else writes the terms?
The information exists. The protection starts before the offer arrives.
If you're working with an organization actively helping high school or college athletes navigate representation, NIL, and agent accountability, we want to know about it.
Drop it in the comments. This is the kind of collective intelligence that changes outcomes.
